I was Spirit-filled at the age of 23, having been raised in a traditional religion where you are groping in the dark to find God. As soon as I saw the scriptures on baptism, I was baptized and within 10 minutes, I received the Holy Spirit, speaking in a new, fledgling language I had never learnt. The lady beside me turned to me and said ‘You are going to have a wonderful life’. Many things have happened since, that have borne that out.
“I was healed of long held fears and anxiety.”
About 3 years ago, I was healed of long-held fears and anxiety. The theme for a church camp that year was ‘It is finished’. These are Jesus’ words. As soon as my eyes fell on the leaflet prepared for the camp, the words struck a chord and I thought ‘It is finished’. Months later, I was telling a visiting pastor that I had suffered from fear and anxiety. He looked at me and said ‘Why would you live there?’ Yes, why would you live in the anxious house, when you can dwell in the house of God and enjoy all His benefits.
“Why would you live in the anxious house?”
In 2009, I was working in a busy job in Brisbane. Often my shoulders ached from the physical, and mental, stresses of the job. One lunch-hour I decided to take my Bible out in the sun to read, so I put it in a shopping bag, but first, decided that I would go and have a short Chinese massage (of about 20 mins). The store where I normally went for these near my home, had not long before opened a branch in the city, just around the corner from my office.
“She had had the same experience I had”
The girl allocated to me was new. She told me she was Nepalese. But, instead of allowing me to relax, she started taking a deep personal interest in me, and commenced asking me probing questions! I – reluctantly at first as I was thinking of getting out into the sunshine – started responding, and, despite the language barrier, soon learned that she had had the same experience as I had, and been baptized and Spirit-filled in Nepal. She told me she had been praying to God for a church to go to. Excited, I pulled the Bible out of my bag to show her that I too was a Christian and invited her to come that Sunday.
Since then, many Nepalese have come to the Church in Australia and Nepal. Many have been groping in the dark to find God in their religious tradition, just as I once was.
“The Lord continues to surprise and delight”
As I walk on with the Lord, He continues to surprise and delight, with expected – and some unexpected - blessings.
