I was brought up in a Catholic family and sent to boarding school until I was 18. Having been steeped in that faith, I felt very self-righteous and bigoted in my beliefs.

I was very self righteous and bigoted

It was not until I was 37 years old that I started to question my beliefs, when a friend of mine, whom I had known to be an atheist, became a Spirit filled person.

Together, we went in search of spiritual fellowship, experiencing all the charismatic excesses in the growing Pentecostal scene at the time. It was new and exciting and more meaningful than my old church.

A friend who had been an atheist became Spirit filled

We joined a group of spiritual people who met once a month and where the Bible was preached and where I heard 'speaking in tongues', testimonies and the movement of the Holy Spirit among these people.

At one of these meetings I was asked if I would like to receive the Holy Spirit, and hands were laid on me. When I went home, I felt that I needed to read the Bible and while I was reading, my tongue changed and I found myself speaking strange words. I knew I had received God's Holy Spirit.

I had been suffering from varicose ulcers on my ankles for the past two years, due to standing at my work place all day. I had seen great miracles occur at the monthly meetings and I went up for a healing in the prayer line. At the end of a week, I noticed that my ulcers were healing and by the time another week had passed, my ankles were completely healed.

For 18 more years, I remained in the old church, yearning for fellowship and spiritual growth and for these things, I committed them to some earnest prayer. Within a space of two weeks, a friend invited me to the RCI church in Coffs Harbour. It was like coming home, as I walked in and saw the fellowship that I had so missed for so long.

I knew that I had to be baptised, the Bible way, and was baptised in the local river a few days later.

Before I finished praying I felt great vitality and strength

Another answer to prayer was when I was working in a nut plantation on a very hot day I was suffering from the intense heat. I knelt down in the middle of the paddock and John 14:14 came into my mind, "Anything that you ask in My name, I shall do it". As I was asking the Lord to take away this heat exhaustion, it disappeared before I had finished praying and I felt great vitality and strength flow through my body.

I have been with RCI for 20 years, growing daily in the Spirit and with the peace and assurance that passes understanding.
